Totally Random Friday – Nov 6

Hey folks! Sorry for the lack of Fashion Friday again this week but it’s been raining for almost two weeks straight which is unheard of here in the Prairies. Everywhere you go someone is commenting on how we’re having Vancouver weather, all rainy and gray. I’m still working out how I’m going to do Fashion Fridays in the winter as -30 isn’t exactly conducive to wearing cute outfits but I’ll figure something out.

So, a couple of fun things this week:

It seems to be some kind of toy sale conspiracy this weekend here in Winnipeg. Mastermind Toys is opening their first Winnipeg location on Kenaston and mailed out a 25% off coupon for any purchases made this weekend. The Disney Store is also having a 25% off sale this weekend. Print this coupon or show it to the cashier on your mobile device. Chapters is having 25% off Friends and Family event (instore only and it looks like you must print the coupon). Toys R Us has launched their Big Holiday Toy Book with many top Christmas toys discounted. Even Sears has offered a large selection of toys from 15 – 40% off. Retailers know that parents are starting to look at buying Christmas presents and are eager to get a piece of that action.

My niece came to Bring Your Kid to Work Day this week. Of course i wanted her to get the full experience of what it’s like to work, so we went to Starbucks at lunch and got our red cups.

Both Teavana and David’s Tea unveiled their holiday collections. I picked up Snow Day and Mulled Wine in cute 50g tins from David’s Tea.

And lots of Joy tea from Teavana in this beautiful limited edition holiday tin.

Inside Out was released this week. If you haven’t seen this latest Pixar movie, you should definitely put it on your list. While it was a little above my toddler’s head, she enjoyed it and there were so many jokes aimed at adults, I can guarantee you’ll chuckle at least a few times. I bought one copy for our house and one for another niece having a birthday soon.

What did you get up to this week? I’d love to hear about it. Happy Shopping!

Totally Random Friday – April 10th

Another Friday. Even though it was a short week, it still seemed to take awhile for Friday to get here. We seem to be having a bout of colds/flu running through our house which is making the days feel long but at least everyone is sleeping through the night.

HomeMovieLast weekend was Easter weekend and our cousins came to visit and we all went to see Home. It was hilarious. Borrow some kids or take your own, you must see this movie. Jim Parsons, from The Big Bang Theory is in it and is so funny. Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez voice the other two main characters. I was a little nervous about taking four girls, ages 7, 5, 3 and 2.5 to sit in a theatre for 90 minutes but they were total stars. Although the littlest one couldn’t decide whether she wanted to sit with Grandma or Mom and changed laps a few times. The five year old rivalled me in how much popcorn she ate (and I love popcorn). I’m also totally loving the soundtrack. Check it out here.

We also went shopping and swimming and I only got one picture.

It doesn’t even have all four of them in it! Ugh

It’s definitely spring and I’ve definitely wrecked all of my $20 umbrellas. It was time to invest in a new umbrella and I knew exactly which one I wanted.

This is Shopping Weather from Cheeky Umbrella.

I bought these three Cheeky Umbrellas for my bridesmaids back in 2011 and they have all told me since what great umbrellas they are. I also loved how they fit in the pictures. The pink one says, “It’s raining, it’s pouring, other umbrellas are boring.” The yellow one says, “When does it start raining men?” and the blue one says, “I like umbrellas in my cocktails.” While none of them are still available on the website, she has many other cute ones, perfect for wishing the rain away.

Hubby and I went on a date night a couple of weeks ago (shocker, I know). We checked out the new sushi restaurant on Pembina, Kimchi Sushi South (in the old Sushi Train location). It was good. They had our favourite red wine by the glass (Apothic Red) and the service was relatively quick. My only complaint was that our rolls showed up before our appetizers. There was also a small problem with our bill but that was quickly taken care of.

Then, we went to Thermea. Wow… just wow. It is an outdoor hot springs spa. There is a hot pool, a warm pool, a cold pool, a sauna, two steam rooms and two relaxation rooms. You can also book a massage (in advance) and eat at the restaurant. It is definitely a high class establishment that Winnipeg has been missing and it is extremely popular since it opened just before Christmas. I highly recommend it for date night, girls’ night out or even a relaxing afternoon by yourself. They do not allow pictures or even cell phones out on the pool deck so despite my best attempts to get some covert ones, I only have one of the lobby to show you.

What’s new with you? Happy Shopping!

Shop Local Saturdays – The Style Bar

Welcome to my new series, Shop Local Saturdays. From now until Christmas, I plan on doing a weekly feature on local businesses. My goal this Christmas is to shop local whenever I can. So far, it hasn’t been going so great but I’m only half done shopping so I got some time to work on it.

Today, I want to talk about one of my new favourite stores for clothing for myself and my husband: The Style Bar.

Check out the line of denim she carries for women: Celebrity Pink. They come in several fab colours.

Regan (pronounced Ray-gan, like the president), who owns the store, is lovely. She always has a smile whenever I stop by and we talk about new trends in Winnipeg and she shows me what new items have come in.

This basic black pencil skirt has pleather panels down either side updating the style for 2014.

She carries a lot of great clothing for men and women that are trendy and very transitionable: wear them to the office and then out for dinner or drinks. And all women’s items in store are under $100. Affordable, trendy and durable clothing – can you tell why I love this store so much?!

My husband has a pair of this line of denim for men - now he won't wear anything else!

My new favourite item that I recently purchased from there is this sweater:

I’ve already worn it a few dozen times since I purchased it at the end of September. It is so versatile and soft, I just love it.

These sweaters will keep your guy (and you!) cozy all winter

I also love that she carries some local brands including Lenard Taylor and Oak + Oar.

The Style Bar is located in Osborne Village on River Ave, in the old Kustom Kulture location. Follow her on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. A big thanks to Regan for sending the photos of her shop so I could include them in this post. Happy Shopping!

Totally Random Friday – Sept 5th

I had a comment made to me that my TRF’s weren’t actually random. They were getting kind of predictable. I explained that the only real randomness to the post was the fact that they didn’t have a theme and the items commented on (or shown) in the post didn’t have to connect to each other. I’m basically giving myself free reign to babble about whatever I want. Does that make sense to you? Or would you prefer TRFs to be completely random? I would appreciate your thoughts on this issue.

1. This week I went to check out the Simpsons’ collab at a MAC counter but they didn’t have it, so I will try to make it to my local MAC store in St. Vital Centre (which is actually not really that close to me and the only MAC store in the city) this weekend. But MAC also released MAC Look in a Box this week on the website that look pretty neat. They seem to be three different sets that include lipstick, lipglass, a small eyeshadow palette with three complimentary shadows and an eyeliner. They retail for $47.50 CDN.

2. I bought some things from Joe Fresh on the weekend. They were having 25% off full-priced items on the website and you know what a cheap-skate bargain-hunter I am. That was too good to pass up. I posted some of the things that I bought in my post, How to Update Your Wardrobe for Fall.

3. Also Joe Fresh related is their collaboration with four fashion bloggers called Turn Color On that they released this week. It’s only on the US site but it’s still interesting to see the picks for each blogger. I also find the Joe website a little overwhelming sometimes to browse and I think this campaign highlights interesting pieces that you may otherwise overlook. I also keep meaning to check out the blogs of the featured bloggers but it’s been a little busy this week so I haven’t had a chance.

4. We are probably heading out to check out ManyFest this weekend. ManyFest is a block-party, street festival, farmers’ market, fun run/race and kids’ play area all rolled into one that is held right downtown on Broadway. Last year we took Cally and she was too little to really understand what it was all about but this year should be better (this is also the way I feel about her birthday, Halloween and Christmas). I’m looking forward to the Food Truck Wars,  and the Mini-Fest Kids’ Zone. I really wanted to do the Electric Donkey but it just didn’t work out. Oh well, maybe next year.

What are you up to this weekend? Enjoying the last bit of summer that is hanging around? I’d love to hear about it. Happy Shopping!

More new stores coming to Polo Park

Hey folks, some exciting shopping news for Winnipeg. We’ve know for awhile that H&M was coming to Polo Park this fall. And if you’ve been to the mall lately you can guess that it will possibly cover two floors on the wing nearest to Hudson’s Bay but close to centre court. Today Polo Park’s Facebook page announced several stores that will be joining the H&M opening in the fall. Here is the quote from their website:

We are pleased to confirm that Urban Outfitters and Anthropolgie will be opening their first stores at Polo Park later this year, a first for the Winnipeg market. They join H&M, who previously announced the opening their first Winnipeg store this fall. New retailers to the shopping centre mix also include Nine West, Thomas Sabo, Fossil, Journeys, WATCH IT! and Pandora.

The website goes on to say this redevelopment will cost $49 million and add 114,000 square feet of new retail space with 25,000 square feet going to H&M. They will also be adding a mall entrance where the old Zellers entrance used to be and 370 feet of new skylights in the new area. The Facebook page also mentions The Disney Store returning to Winnipeg as part of this redevelopment. Wow! This is super exciting news for Winnipeg. Pair this with the news earlier this year that an outlet mall is coming to Winnipeg in 2017 by the new IKEA and we are finally becoming a shopping destination along with other major Canadian cities.

What stores are you excited about? Any that you think still need to come to Winnipeg? Happy Shopping!
