2014 in hindsight

So, another year has gone by. This seems like a fitting time to give myself a very public lashing for all my mistakes the last year. Or… I could cut myself some slack, reminding me that blogging is something I do for fun, not to add more guilt on to my plate, and tell you what I felt were the highlights and tell you how I hope to make next year better.

Highlight #1 – I loved finding and then telling you about all the fashion collaborations this year: Target’s collabs with Altuzarra, Toms, Peter Pilotto and Sarah Stevenson. Plus Banana Republic’s collab with Roland Mouret, Keds and Kate Spade, and Aritzia and Disney, All so fab and I know I only covered ones you were able to buy in Winnipeg so there were many, many more.

Highlight #2 – My post This is Me and I’m Ok with That was probably my most open and honest post this year. Along with Call Me Beautiful, Or Don’t, Whatever. I enjoyed these forays into thought-proving (hopefully) essays vs. my usual post of  makeup swatches.

Highlight #3 – 2014 was my year to explore the horizons of makeup subscriptions. This post really summarizes how I feel about the two I subscribe to. I would just like to add that since that post, I have had two more Luxe Boxes (one bad and one good) and that Julep seems to have fixed their shipping issues and I am much happier with their service.

Highlight #4 – Shoppers around Winnipeg waited all summer while saws spun and workmen wandered around Polo Park. So many great things were rumoured to be coming including H&M, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, the return of the Disney Store. And the expansion (in my opinion) did not disappoint. Read my posts about the rumours and see some pics of the actual expansion.

Highlight #5 – This summer, I joined the Canadian Beauty Bloggers Network and WOW! What an amazing group of supportive, funny, genuine women who also love makeup. My kind of people. There are some group meet ups scheduled for 2015 and I’m excited to get out and meet other people who have 150 nail polishes and 32 lipsticks and complain about the lack of light to swatch in December and don’t think any of that is weird.

Now, the things I want to do different for next year:

I know I say this all the time but I really do want to stick to a regular posting schedule. MWF sounds like a good one so I’ll try to keep to that. Or maybe just post three times per week, regardless of days…. I’ll keep working on it.

I was truly inspired by this post by Kalyn Lord earlier this year. It talked about being true to yourself and the reason you blog. But I didn’t really think about how it applied to me until this month when I just haven’t blogged. It’s not that I don’t have time, it’s not that I don’t care. It’s that I couldn’t be bothered to sit down and tell you about stuff. Or remember to take pictures of things (ie. mascara) during the day when there was light. I realize I’m not the only blogger to be frustrated by the lack of daylight in December but that really combined with other things to give this The Best Month of Not Blogging award. So I realize that it’s time to start planning or my blog is going to die the slow painful death of the “not-happening” kind. In this planning I also want to take some time to thing about why I blog and why I think people should read my blog.

In 2015 I also want to cut myself some slack. I am a mom of a very active toddler, I have a really demanding job that bleeds past 9-5, I try to workout 3 times per week (note the try at the beginning of that phrase), plus all the things you need to do to live every day really add up, like meals, cleaning the house, family events, etc, etc, etc. I’m not complaining. I love being busy and wouldn’t change any of those things. I just tend to ignore things if/when they fly off the rails and completely berate myself for letting it happen. I need to be more gentle with myself when I make mistakes or forget things.

I am also working on some more specializing of my blog. Hopefully I will also be welcoming a semi-regular guest poster to give us a different view on makeup and I want to continue my Shop Local Saturdays series.

Do you have a favourite highlights from my blog? Any constructive criticism on things I could do better or that you would like to see more of? I would love to hear. Happy Shopping!
