Mani Monday – April Julep Maven box

Happy Monday! Today I have for you my April Julep Maven box.

I ended up going with the Classic with a Twist box which included Jenna (orange) and Connie (purple) with the Lock Down Your Brows eyebrow gel. I then added on Randi (pink), Addison (yellow) and 3 emery boards (not shown) and got the lipgloss shown (no longer available) for buying three add-ons.

Honestly, I wasn’t crazy about trying the brow powder that was the feature beauty product last month. I use and love Anastasia Dipbrow and am not interested in trying anything else.

So, instead of just swatching, I decided to do some nail art as well.

First of all, I used Randi (pink) and Connie (purple) for a base coat. Randi is super smooth and wonderfully opaque in two coats. Connie is a little streaky and semi-translucent after two coats. I dotted on China Glaze Snow in a star formation and then added Addison (yellow) on Randi and Jenna (orange) on Connie in the middle and randomly around the flowers.

A couple of days later I did this dotticure using (L to R): OPI’s Just Groovy [no longer available], Julep Jenna, Randi, Leah and Addison. I used China Glaze Snow for the dots again. Addison (yellow) is surprisingly opaque after two coats as is Jenna (orange). Both had great consistency and went on easily.

Here is my Cinderella hand, proving that (occasionally) I paint both hands to match.

Overall, I am very happy with my April box. The colours are bright and fun, perfect for summer and the brow gel will make a great gift for a friend.

Mani Monday on a Tuesday – November 4

I went shopping and for drinks last night with my friend instead of posting my Mani Monday, so I hope you’ll accept my apology and appreciate my Mani Monday on a Tuesday.

Over the weekend, I bought the gorgeous MAC polish in Just Jewels. It is described on the website as “light pink over silvery rainbow pearls.”

Here I’ve layered it over Essie’s Under the Twilight, which is a lovely dark purple-navy.

Did I mention how gorgeous this is? I think this is going to be my go-to easy-mani look for the entire Christmas season, if not the rest of the winter.

Mani Monday – China Glaze Don’t Honk Your Thorn and Julep Flora and Leah

So apparently I’m hooked on dotticures this month. I had a great time putting this one together using China Glaze Don’t Honk Your Thorn from the City Flourish collection that came out this past spring. This isn’t normally a colour I would buy at all. My mom bought it and it doesn’t go with her skin tone so I got it. Isn’t it great when that happens?

This is actually a gorgeous nude colour though with just a bit of shimmer, hardly noticeable at all but adds interest to the colour, imo.

Then I took a dotting tool and added large dots of both Julep Leah (green) and Julep Flora (purple) and then added small dots around those. Then topped with a thick coat of Seche Vite, which is my go-to, favourite top coat.

Mani Monday – Julep Daria and OPI Divine Swine

Hey folks! This week’s Mani Monday is using some older colours. I got Julep Daria in a mystery box awhile back and while it’s not a colour I would’ve picked myself I think it’s going to be one that I use semi-regularly during the fall/winter. It’s a really nice dark gray that goes on opaque in two coats with no streaking. It also has a purple undertone to it in daylight.

OPI Divine Swine I bought ages ago. Like the first time The Muppets did a collab with OPI for the first Muppet’s movie remake. I was surprised when I typed it in Google and then found it on I love the small pink glitter and the larger silver glitter. I’ve used it before and really love the effect it gives.

I also found The PolishAholic’s post about this collection. I think she was right about posting about the patchiness of the glitters. This one definitely makes a better topper than a stand-alone polish.

Mani Monday – Julep Avni & Clio glitter gradient

I paint my nails all the time and hardly ever talk about it on my blog. So here’s a quick post about my current mani. I just received my August Julep box last week and all the colours I got were gorgeous. Rich with some shimmer and shifting colours but not too overt. Rich jewel tones, which are some of my favourite colours.

I decided to go with the royal purple colour, called Avni, even though it’s still summer and I really should be cherishing all the pastels and bright colours that will soon be relegated to the back of my nail polish box. Two coats got me a fantastic base and then I added Julep Clio as a glitter gradient. (You may have noticed, I’m kind of a nut for gradients.)

The first two pics are taken near a window and the third is using indoor lighting. Apologies for the blurriness of the third, the pictures just looked more blue near the window and I wanted to capture the purple shift.

June Wishlist

The late emergence of summer is bad for retail but good for consumers. Many retailers are having their June sale and blowing out their summer stuff (which to be quite honest, we can just barely wear here in Winnipeg).

My wishlist this month is mostly all about the makeup! As you’ve read, Rebekah and I have been on a no-buy this month and that has been good for us, me especially, forcing me to use what I have instead of moving on to the next pretty thing. It also has me drooling over several products and (not-so) patiently waiting for July 1 so I can run to the store and buy everything on this list! So without further ado, here are the things I’m hot for this month:

1. Lashstash to Go

This set from Sephora contains 5 samples of mascara: Too Faced Cosmetics Better Than Sex Mascara; Lancôme HYPNÔSE DRAMA Mascara; Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara; Blinc Inc. Blinc Mascara; Bare Minerals Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara in Intense Black; and a voucher for full-size featured mascara for the bargain price of $30. I do have one makeup purchase allowed during the no-buy. This may be it.

2. OPI & Coca-Cola collaboration

At first I was only really eyeing up one or two of the polishes. Then I read reviews at The Polishaholic, Kalyn Lord and Julie from Swatch and Review and now I need them all. NailPolishCanada has the mini set for $26 and it includes minis of Nail Envy and topcoat, which would be perfect for my desk.

3. Sharon Osbourne and Kelly Osbourne collab with MAC

MTY302At first I didn’t really care about this collab  too much but I’ve been eyeing up the Nars Matte Lip Pencils and now that MAC has some, I’ve gotta try them.

4. Indie Polish

Since being introduced to independent polish makers through reading blogs like Chalkboard Nails and Storms and Stars and I have fallen in love with the following:

Botany Plants Lately from Dr. Lacquer. Did you see the flower shaped glitter? Amazing!

Fairy Flurries by Jaded Nail Co. This one changes colour when it gets cold and glows in the dark. Ummm… how fricken amazing is that?!

What are you looking forward to or have on your wishlist? Makeup? Clothing? Something else? Let me know. Happy Shopping!

Totally Random Friday – Jan 31

So, it’s been…. awhile since we had a TRF. Sorry about that. January is just such a boring shopping month. Once you get over spending any money or gift certs that you got for Christmas, it’s all over and you just get to watch the email pore in from your favourite stores as they lower and lower the price on items, practically begging you to buy something, anything. I don’t know about you but I’m holding out for when my mom, my daughter and I go to Toronto in three weeks. And then I’m buying spring stuff. Screw you winter!

Anyways… some exciting thing did happen this month and here they are:

It was my birthday.

I entered The Lacquer Legion challenge and created a manicure that I believe embodied the theme, “Reinvention.” Original idea by Polish Art Addict.

I made these amazing cookies, recipe from Bakerella. I swapped the walnuts for pistachios. Yum!

I had some boudoir pictures taken. This was the outfit I bought for the shoot (only in black, which is not on the website). If you are interested in getting boudoir shots done, I highly recommend Trina from Connections Captured. She was extremely professional and discreet. And for a limited time, she is offering an amazing package deal of $95 for 15-20 edited shots, owning the images, and the sitting fee.  It was truly an amazing experience. One that I will definitely be repeating in the future.

Overall, not bad for one of the coldest winters on record. What have you bought this month? What are you looking forward to for spring? Happy Shopping!

OPI Nail Envy Review

nail envyI have some of the softest nails of anyone I know. I can “cut” my nails with a nail file, I don’t have to use nail clippers. So when Bekkie recommended Nail Envy, it sounded like something I could really use.

Initially, I put on two coats. It dried really quickly and made my nails looked all shiny. There was no bad smell, which is always a bonus. When I first saw this I somehow thought of that stuff you put on your nails that tastes bad to make you stop biting them.

I left my nails bare except for this base coat, applying a new coat every second day like it recommended. I didn’t notice any major changes in the first couple of weeks. Since then I’ve been wearing it about a month and my nails are noticeably harder and stronger. They don’t seem to be growing too fast, in fact I would say that my nails are actually growing slower.

The price tag on this is a little hefty, $17 ish depending on where you purchase it. I do like it and will continue to use it as a base coat, especially since I am dabbling in nail art and I do find my manicures last a lot longer when I use this (3 – 5 days vs. 1 – 3 days prior).

Overall, I give it a thumbs up. Have you tried this product or another base coat/nail strengthener/hardener that you love? Leave me a comment. Happy Shopping!

Join the Laquer Legion

Bekkie and I have decided to take part in The Laquer Legion, a monthly nail art challenge. This month’s theme is Reinvention. I have no idea what that means. The Facebook page says:

Reinvent a classic technique like the French. Reinvent a look you love with new colors. Reinvent one of your first attempts at nail art with your newfound skills, Or reinvent your own style by traing something you wouldn’t normally try. Just invent… again.

So I guess I should say, I don’t know what that means to me. And my nail are painfully short right now. I’m sure I’ll come up with something by Monday.

We would love it if you would take part in The Lacquer Legion too! Monday, Jan 27th is the date for the manis to be posted on the Facebook page or Instagram hashtag #LLreinvention. And leave me a comment and let me know you are participating.

For some nail art ideas, check out Bekkie’s blog, The Nailasaurus, I’m Feeling Nail-Venturous, and Chelsea Queen (this nail art is not for the faint of heart). And for reviews on colours, I love The PolishAholic and Storms and Stars.

Happy Shopping!
