Winter 2014 Luxe Box

With the craziness of Christmas and Mexico, I keep forgetting about my Winter Luxe Box. So now I’ve had it over a month and I still haven’t tried all the products AND I’ve given some away. Saying that, overall I was very happy with the products this month and the value on my box.

So here’s a breakdown of the products:

Profoundly Purple NICOLE BY OPI

Sample Size: $3.99 / 3.75 ml

This deep eggplant has soulful beauty. Nicole by OPI puts salon quality at your fingertips…from the colorful world of OPI.

I never get tired of purple nail polish. I’m sure I have a dupe in my collection for this colour but that didn’t dampen my excitement on getting another one. I’m getting enough minis that I should put them in my desk at work for emergency manicure situations. This one ended up going to my mother. She loves vampy purples even more than I do!

Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser SUKI SKINCARE

Sample Size: $10.95 / 30 ml

the suki® difference: : our soft sugar crystals (sanding sugar) provide both granular & AHA cell renewal without tearing skin. granules melt into skin to help lift toxins & dead cells for safe & effective deep cleansing.

solution: helps smooth & even skin tone, reducing the appearance of dull, dry skin build-up, signs of most blemishes & flare-ups. addresses aging concerns & jumpstarts collagen production while rejuvenating the complexion.

This sample size was perfect to take to Mexico with me. It smelled great and was an excellent exfoliator and face wash. Slightly oily after but very mild, not greasy.

Eyelash Curler LOOSE BUTTON

Retail Value: $20.00 / Full Size

Give your lashes their biggest curl and best volume ever with our Loose Button eyelash curler.

I like that the Luxe Box includes a Loose Button tool. Last quarter, the fan brush was one of the few redeeming qualities of the box. But I’m not big on an eyelash curler. I’ll keep it and I might try it again but it’s not going to be a go-to tool.

Ruby Murray Moisture Matte Lipstick BUTTER LONDON

Retail Value: $25.00 / Full Size

Full coverage, ultimate colour payoff in a velvety matte finish.  Specialized pigments extend colour wear. Long-lasting, non-drying formula does not feather or bleed.  Revolutionary gel-capsule technology delivers colour and moisture for smooth, silky application and maximum comfort. Triple Butter Complex is used for rich, creamy, lasting moisture – Mango Seed Butter, Murumuru Seed Butter, and Cupuacu Seed Butter

I chose not to upgrade to the full size for an extra $10. I did like the sample but probably not enough to buy it. The matte finish was nice and the colour was long-lasting but I found it to be drying and I wanted to put on lipgloss after about an hour. Flattering colour though.

Hydro Cool Firming Face Gels for Smile Lines SKYN ICELAND

Sample Value: $8.75 / 2 Gel Patches

Turn back the clock by visibly filling in smile lines for up to 24 hours, with this intensive weekly treatment that delivers instant wrinkle erasing results–without a needle in sight. In just ten minutes, these peptide-packed transdermal patches infuse deep facial creases with a concentrated dose of line-plumping ingredients to firm, tone and flatten expression lines you have, while preventing future ones from forming.

I put these on one night while watching Gilmore Girls (again, on Season 6 now).

Obviously I look dead sexy. It was a neat product but I didn’t really notice any difference in my laugh lines after one use. Maybe with multiple uses but at $35 for 8 patches, it’s unlikely I will be purchasing this product.

Lip Crayon BURT’S BEES®

Retail Value: $9.99 / Full Size

Introducing six creamy, full-coverage shades of matte lip color in a modern crayon. Lightweight moisture for a comfortable, everyday wear formula infused with Shea Butter, Kendi Oil, and Jojoba Oil. It’s color that truly cares for your lips!

*Creamy matte color and moisture-rich wear *For everyday wear either alone or layered under a Lip Gloss or Lip Shine *Precise application in a playful form without the hassle and mess of sharpening *No added flavor or fragrance *Hydrates and moisturizes lips, leaving them feeling soft and smooth

I loved the pencil. It was soft and creamy and went on well. And then I would wipe it off because the colour wasn’t right for me. Luckily I have a friend who I knew it would look amazing on, so I gave it to her. I’ll have to pick up another colour now that they are released in stores. (Read Julie from Swatch and Review’s post on all six colours here)

Perk Up Dry Shampoo AMIKA

Sample Value: $10.00 / 30 ml

Freshen dirty hair, create extra volume, and extend your beautiful blowout with a touch of amika’s Perk Up Dry Shampoo. The only dry shampoo on the market with no aluminum and no talc, once you try it you’ll never go back to your old stuff.

I love dry shampoo. I’ve found ones that I liked better than others but none that I’ve hated, so this product is a win for me. This is one of the nicest smelling dry shampoos that I’ve used. And it’s a very light formula. There’s also no white powder finish that there traditionally is with dry shampoo. I will definitely be buying this.

Clinical KP Treatment Cloths PAULA’S CHOICE

Sample Size: $14.00 / 10 cloths

Wipe your KP woes away. And banish “bacne”, too. These easy-to-use keratosis pilaris wipes get rid of those little red bumps (aka chicken skin) and reveal smooth, even skin anywhere on the body.

Treats keratosis pilaris, acne breakouts, and redness

  • Combines 8% lactic acid and 2% salicylic acid to reduce and potentially eliminate bumps and breakouts

I have those bumps on the back of my arms… at least I thought I did until I went to look and realized they aren’t there anymore. Then I wondered about two things: (1) when did they go away? and (2) when was the last time I looked at the back of my arms?? Now not sure what to do with these… I’ll check the backs of my friends’ arms and see if anyone else can use them.

According to this, that puts my Winter Luxe box value around $80 CAD, which is pretty good. I paid $26 plus taxes, which comes to $29.12.

Sorry for the number of pics from the Luxe Box website. I gave some things away before I took pictures of them. And it’s so dark in the evenings that the few pics I took aren’t that great anyways. I promise to do better!

Review of Topbox’s Limited Edition LOULOU 10th Anniversary Collection

As most makeup collectors and beauty bloggers, I am a sucker for limited editions. And special packaging. And trial sizes. So when Topbox added all these things together in a Limited Edition LOULOU 10th Anniversary Collection box, I knew I had to get it.

IMG_5063.PNG I don’t normally subscribe to Topbox but I love checking out their limited edition boxes. I previously purchased their Flare and Sally Hansen one in the spring (which I just realized, I never took pictures of… whoops).

In this box was some items I am super excited to use. So, onto the products! IMG_5110.JPG

B.Kamins Bio-Maple Maple Sugar Body Scrub (12 g) $3.50 – Looking forward to trying this out. Plus, it’s made in Canada.

Barefoot Venus Assorted Shea Butter Hand Cream (60 mL) $6 – This smells like a trip to the beach, which is nice. I don’t feel there’s a lot to say about it. It’s lotion, I’ll use it. When researching the cost of the product, I found out it’s also made in Canada, which I always like. Check out their webpage for a retailer near you.

essie sleek stick™ (full size) ~$10: I’ve  tried these before and not been a big fan. I’m sure I’ll wear them sometime but I’m not totally excited about this product.

essie Under The Twilight nail lacquer (full size) ~$10: This is a gorgeous navy/purple cream with crazy amounts of shine. It lasted a couple of days with no topcoat. I think this will get a lot of wear, it is a perfect colour for winter.

IMG_5126.JPG Eyeko Black Magic Mascara (4 mL) $13 – This was one of the products I was excited to try from the get-go. It is gorgeous and does exactly what mascara should do: It lengthens and the staying power is great.

MeMeMe – Elegant Eyes Eyeshadow Trio (full size) $8 – Keeping with the winter-colour theme of the box, this purple/gray/black eyeshadow trio is great for making a smoky eye. The colours have good staying power and show up pretty brilliantly. My only complaint would be, there was lots of dust leftover after using the colours and that always feels wasteful when eyeshadows do that. Here is the colours blended into a smokey eye: IMG_5078.JPG Love this combo! IMG_5105.JPG

OSiS+ Session Label Dust It Flex Mattifying Powder (10 g) $20 – I have tried several dry shampoos over the last year and so far OSIS powders have been my fav. The powders tend not to smell as much as the ones in aerosol cans and I find them easier to apply. I don’t notice much of a difference between this powder and the other OSIS one but I like this product and will definitely use it all.

philosophy hope in a jar moisturizer for all skin types (7 mL) $10 – This stuff is lovely. Out of all the things in the box, this might be the one thing I buy again after. It smells like you’ve been to the spa and works great. My skin feels moisturized but not oily. And you only need the amount of a pea for your whole face so even this sample has lasted a couple of weeks.

Teeez Easy On The Eyes Eyeliner – Black (full size) $13 – This is a great liquid liner. It stays all day, even after work and bootcamp. It reminds me a lot of the Eyeko The Skinny liner . Here I’ve pair all three eye makeup items from this box: the mascar, liner and the eyeshadow.

Yves Saint Laurent Manifesto Eau De Parfum (1.5 mL) $3.50 – I never actually received this. I got an email a couple of days before it shipped telling me this wasn’t in my box and telling me that they would send two samples along later. Which is great if I like it…. but not so great if I’m not crazy about it. So, I guess we’ll see.

So, you’ve seen the dollar amounts next to each description. I paid $35 plus taxes for this and the total dollar value for the products I received is $97. Add that to the four issues of LouLouMagazine that I will receive in the mail and the value of this box increases to $105, which is a great deal. You can also choose to get a digital subscription for a year (8 issues) instead of the 4 print issues or you can send the subscription to a friend. Overall, I am really happy with this box. Head over to Topbox and get your own before they ship on Nov 17th. Happy Shopping!
