Winter Luxe Box 2015

Well, here we are in the middle of January and I’m going to talk about a box I got…. almost six weeks ago. On the bright side, it’s a quarterly box so the next one won’t show up for another six weeks.

Without any further ado, here is the Winter Luxe Box from Loose Button. This was shipped on Nov 30th and arrived the first week in December. And like every other time, I think that this will be the last one, that I’m going to cancel after this box. And every time, after I open the box, I’m pleasantly surprised at the interesting things sent to me. This time was no exception.

Three full-sized products and four samples – awesome!

Teez Trend Cosmetics Read My Lips Lipstick in Roulette Red, 2 g, $28.94

This long-lasting lipstick combines the power of highly-pigmented coverage and a unique satin, matte finish. The lipstick’s smooth, ultra creamy texture and added coconut oil extract nourishes and hydrates the lips, with colour that lasts for up to 8 hours.

Swatches of Roulette Red and the Starlooks Luxe Longwear Eye Liner Pen.

I haven’t really used this lipstick too much. It’s a smidge too brown for my liking and I seem to be on a nude lip kick right now.

Starlooks Luxe Longwear Eye Liner Pen, 10 mL, $19

This liner is a staple product for every makeup lover, this felt tipped pen makes it impeccably easy to create flawless eye lines of any variety. Applies smoothly, dries quickly, and lasts all day (or night) long.

This has becoming my go-to, favourite liner. I like that it’s got a solid, felt-tipped pen-type applicator which makes lining my eyes super easy and fast. I also get perfect lines, everytime.

The FaceShop Character Mask, $4

Wash face. Pull out the mask and carefully place it on the face. Remove after 10-15 minutes and tap lightly to absorb the remaining essence into the skin.

While this worked really well, I looked absolutely ridiculous while wearing it. Even more ridiculous than regular paper masks look. I can’t imagine anyone who would like to look like a barnyard animal while they did their beauty routine. Highly unlikely I will buy this in the future.

Benefit Cosmetics, they’re real tinted primer, 3g, value $10.33

Dramatically boost length and separation with a high performing gel formula, which is water-resistant, and keep the lashes in great condition with the provitamin B5.

I don’t really understand this product. It’s like brown mascara… to go under other mascara, right? I wore it one day just to try it (and of course, forgot to take pictures) and it had a nice, light brown tint to it that gave me a natural, I-woke-up-like-this look. I’m still grasping the point to this though. One day I will wear it under the other mascara and let you know if it makes a big difference.

Benefit Cosmetics, roller lash mascara, 3g, value $10.33

It’s a roller for lashes! The eye-opening Hook ‘n’ Roll brush grabs, separates, lifts and curls… which the instant curve-setting formula holds for 12 hours. Gently wiggle the wand from base of lashes to tip. Repeat across your lash line, making sure to catch every lash.

IMG_8115 IMG_8123

I had bought into the hype about this and was wanting to love it. And while it’s nice, I don’t think it’s all that. I’ll use up the sample but I prolly won’t buy it in the future.

Benefit Cosmetics, they’re real! mascara, 3g, value $10.33

Benefit’s #1 nascar lifts, curls and lengthens for lashes beyond belief! Jet Black, glossy and long wearing.

I appreciate this mascara way more than RollerLash. I especially love the little porcupine spikes at the edge helping to get all the smaller  lashes at either end of my eye – as long I don’t poke myself. lol. I know this sample shows up in all the boxes and is easier to get than just about any other sample but I still enjoyed receiving it and count it as a win.

Benefit Cosmetics, they’re real! remover, 3g, value $1.38

Dip a clean cotton swab in they’re real! remover to instantly fix any eye makeup mistakes.

Ever since I started using Julep’s Bare Faced Oil, I haven’t felt the need to use eye makeup remover. However, this remover by Benefit helped me out of a few tough spots this week when I didn’t want to rub oil all over my eye and either start my makeup over again or re-wash my face. I think this will go on my list to purchase in the future.

So, there you have it, another Luxe Box. The value of products was $84.31 and while the value of the Benefit deluxe samples are high, I used the cost of full sized products to find the value of the samples so they should be fairly accurate. I paid $29 (including taxes) so the quality of the box is still there for me. I’m also please that despite the decline in the Canadian dollar, there has not been a decline in products/value for this box.

Thoughts? I’d love to hear them. Happy Shopping!

Fall Luxe Box 2015

It’s Luxe Box time again! I was considering cancelling this subscription and saving some money but both the products and the value of the box is still great so I think I’m going to continue with it for awhile. Here’s what I received this month:

Ofra Universal Eyebrow Pencil, 1.13 g, value $13

Water resistant pencil suitable for the most sensitive eye area. It is the perfect solution for your eyebrows and is call Universal Eyebrow Pencil for a reason as it is one colour to suit all skin tones. It is soft enough and will make it easy for you to create a perfect shape.

This eyebrow pencil has a great gel-like formula and helps brows stay in place while filling them in. I really like it. That being said, it is a shade or two too dark for me. I think I’ll end up giving it to my mom. I checked their website to see if they sold any more colours. They don’t…  Anyways, while this product didn’t work out for me, I would be willing to try more of their makeup products in future.

So Susan Rose Quartet Lip and Cheek Cream, 4 g, value $12

A richly-pigmented, hydrating lip and cheek pomade that delivers 12 hours of continuous wear with dryness, creasing or smudging.

I’ve gotten other So Susan products that I totally love but I have a hard time believing I am going to use this. The brush looks cheesy, the colours look over-saturated and nothing like anything I would put on my cheeks. My lips are still super dry and not accepting anything except Vaseline and Blistex so I can’t try them out on there. This is going in my give away pile.

Eyeko Hydrogel Eye Patch,  3g, value $4.50

Our botanically infused eye patches instantly brighten and revive eyes for a wide-awake look. Concentrated anti-stress and anti-fatigue ingredients treat the delicate eye area visibly diminishing dark shadows and puffiness leaving skin hydrated and firm.

My daughter laughed her head off when she saw me walking around the house like this. While I haven’t really noticed any difference in the moisture in my under eye area, this was kind of fun. This also might be a great product for when you have a fever or a hangover.

OSIS+ Session Label Dust It Flex Fragranced Mattifying Powder, 10g, value $25

The first mattifying frangranced powder for smashing texture and incredible root volume with lava rock for flexible hold and grip that lasts non-stop.

I love dry shampoo. I’ve probably mentioned that once or six times. I got this one in my Flare box last year and loved it. I am excited to get it again.

Delectable Ultra Nourishing Hand Cream, 60 mL, value $7

This miracle material hand cream is packed frill of goodness with shea butter, coconut oil and aloe vera, to smooth, nourish and rejuvenate hands and cuticles. Rich and never greasy, this beautiful blend leaves your hands super smooth, superbly soft and perfectly pretty.

This hand lotion was greasy when I initially put it on. But it absorbed quickly and then my hands were soft for awhile after. The smell is nice and the sample is a half decent size. I think I will take this to work for use at my desk.

pur~delicate gentle soy milk cleanser and makeup remover, 30 mL, value $6.55

A mild soap-free, on-foaming cleanser that respects the delicate nature of your skin. Leaves your face touchable and silky soft, without a trace of impurity.

I used this to take off my makeup and it was fine. I mean, it did what is was supposed to do but not in a way that made me excited about it. I can’t see myself purchasing this again.

Ciate London Nail Lacquer in Couture Noir, 13.5 mL, value $15

The formula is amazingly pigmented, long lasting and available in a range of finishes whilst formulated to be easy to apply.

Ciate Couture Noir over Julep Cally

I haven’t every tried Ciate before but I was very impressed with the shine in this glitter topper. It didn’t really need a coat of Seche Vite but I needed the manicure to last three days for sure, so I added one anyways. The price tag for Ciate polish is a little steep but I will probably pick up another colour in the future.

Not on the card but also included was the Tresemme Perfectly Undone Wave Creation Sea Foam. I don’t have curly hair anymore but I will try this when I’ve left my hair to dry overnight and I have major bedhead.

This quarter’s box had five full sized products and three samples and was worth $85. If you are thinking about signing up for Luxe Box, I’d love if you would use my referral link here. Try any of these products? Which is your favourite? Happy Shopping!

Summer Luxe Box 2015

So apparently my Spring Luxe Box was so underwhelming that I didn’t even talk about it on my blog at all. It actually didn’t occur to me that I hadn’t used or photographed any of the products until my Summer Luxe Box turned up. Oops! Oh well.

Spring Luxe Box
Spring Luxe Box

Well, now looking at it again, I did love the Buxom Weightless Foundation and I do use the Eyeko Brow Gel on the weekends when I don’t want to use my usual Dipbrow.

Anyways, the Summer Luxe Box was much more exciting. I got 7 products with a good range of hair, makeup, skin and nail products.

Bare Minerals Lash Domination mascara, 1.5 mL, value $3.13

A do-it-all mascara for larger-than-life lashes. This volumizing, lengthening, thickening, separating, and long-wearing mascara is designed to curve around lashes and coat from all angles with intense black colour.

First up is the BareMinerals Lash Domination mascara. I already know I love this mascara, having gotten it in the Sephora lash sampler from last summer. What came as a shock was the tiny tube it came in. 1.5mL?? It’s about the same size as my pinky finger. It probably cost more to produce than what I’ve figured out it’s worth is above. Speaking of that, I used the cost from Sephora for a full size instead of the price on the Luxe Box card, $23 vs. $18. Anyways, I will throw this in my purse for some emergency mascara touch-ups.

Here’s a photo of me using the deluxe sample of Lash Domination from last summer.

essie Nail Lacquer, 13.5 mL, value ~$10

After applying an essie base coat, apply 2-3 thin coats of colour, waiting 2 min. between each coat. Finish with ‘good to go’ topcoat.

This is a pretty coral-y pink shade that I would never buy but I will wear. Win-win. Name of shade: Cute as a button (haha, Luxe Box, that’s a good one)

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF 50, 3 mL, value $2.01

Advanced 100% Mineral sunscreen + antioxidant protection in revolutionary ultra-light texture, slightly tinted for a healthy glow.

So, I knew 3mL wasn’t a lot. It’s about enough for one application…. which has left me feeling ambiguous about the product. First of all, I liked the tinted aspect. It covered up my dark circles and the couple of zits I have and evened out my skin tone. The fact that it’s tinted did kinda make me feel like I should be applying with a brush instead of my fingers but whatever. It went on smoothly and seemed to sink in right away. I have been out in the sun and my face doesn’t appear to have burnt, so it’s doing it’s job there. I just wish there was more. Maybe there are other effects that would be more noticeable if only I could’ve tried it for a week.

Batiste Original Dry Shampoo, 50 mL, $5

Batiste Dry Shampoo is your secret weapon for fresh looking and feeling hair anytime, anywhere.

I love dry shampoo. I’ve tried about 15 kinds looking for the perfect one. (This is the perfect one but it is perpetually sold out, bummer). I started using this product this week and have already emptied the container. Apparently there’s only about 3 uses in this size. It works well, I mean, it gets rid of oily hair but overall this is a dud product. It is stinky and it turned my hair white when applied. Not a fan, will never be buying again.

Fruits & Passion Cucumber Face Mask, $2.50

This refreshing Face Mask contains an essence specially formulated to improve the appearance of your skin. Your skin is moisturized, softened and more luminous.

This is going with my other products for an at-home-spa day. You know, a day that I have some time to myself, like never.

Medusa’s Makeup Eyeshadow in Xtinct, 2g, $8

Highly pigmented mineral pressed powder with micro sparkles. For best results, apply “Stick It” primer and then apply with a brush.

I was not thrilled with this product. I thought it would be this lovely bright purple with sparkles. And it is, just not on it’s own. I used Smashbox Photo Finish 24 Hour Shadow Primer and NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk and then it finally looked sort of the way I wanted it to. Not a great product.

Elizabeth Arden PREVAGE Anti-aging + Intensive Repair Eye Serum, 3mL, $31

Help tighten, firm and smooth the appearance of visible aging signs around your eyes with Elizabeth Arden PREVAGE Anti-aging + Intensive Repair Eye Serum. Pair this with PREVAGE Anti-aging + Intensive Repair Daily Serum for face to improved texture and ton and achieve younger-looking skin.

Wow, this little tube is $30! I’m only in my 30s and super happy with my skin care regime with Julep’s Bare Face oil and Biotherm’s AquaSource Deep Serum. This sample will probably go to my mom. It seems more than what I would need at my age. I also don’t need to get hooked on $155 eye cream just yet.

So, that was my box this quarter. Overall I liked the products and felt it was a good mix. Fairly good value too considering I pay $26+taxes and the items total $61.64. This is the first box since Topbox took over Luxe Box/Loose Button and they have done a great job. My only (small) complaint was that they included this card to tell me all about my products, which didn’t allow me to cut and paste all the descriptions, which is what I normally do instead of typing them out. This is the extra mile I go for you guys. 😉

What did you think of the box? Did you get one? Or did this one make you want to sign up to receive the fall box? Check Luxe Box’s Instagram and/or Facebook to see the fall product leaks. Happy Shopping!

Winter 2014 Luxe Box

With the craziness of Christmas and Mexico, I keep forgetting about my Winter Luxe Box. So now I’ve had it over a month and I still haven’t tried all the products AND I’ve given some away. Saying that, overall I was very happy with the products this month and the value on my box.

So here’s a breakdown of the products:

Profoundly Purple NICOLE BY OPI

Sample Size: $3.99 / 3.75 ml

This deep eggplant has soulful beauty. Nicole by OPI puts salon quality at your fingertips…from the colorful world of OPI.

I never get tired of purple nail polish. I’m sure I have a dupe in my collection for this colour but that didn’t dampen my excitement on getting another one. I’m getting enough minis that I should put them in my desk at work for emergency manicure situations. This one ended up going to my mother. She loves vampy purples even more than I do!

Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser SUKI SKINCARE

Sample Size: $10.95 / 30 ml

the suki® difference: : our soft sugar crystals (sanding sugar) provide both granular & AHA cell renewal without tearing skin. granules melt into skin to help lift toxins & dead cells for safe & effective deep cleansing.

solution: helps smooth & even skin tone, reducing the appearance of dull, dry skin build-up, signs of most blemishes & flare-ups. addresses aging concerns & jumpstarts collagen production while rejuvenating the complexion.

This sample size was perfect to take to Mexico with me. It smelled great and was an excellent exfoliator and face wash. Slightly oily after but very mild, not greasy.

Eyelash Curler LOOSE BUTTON

Retail Value: $20.00 / Full Size

Give your lashes their biggest curl and best volume ever with our Loose Button eyelash curler.

I like that the Luxe Box includes a Loose Button tool. Last quarter, the fan brush was one of the few redeeming qualities of the box. But I’m not big on an eyelash curler. I’ll keep it and I might try it again but it’s not going to be a go-to tool.

Ruby Murray Moisture Matte Lipstick BUTTER LONDON

Retail Value: $25.00 / Full Size

Full coverage, ultimate colour payoff in a velvety matte finish.  Specialized pigments extend colour wear. Long-lasting, non-drying formula does not feather or bleed.  Revolutionary gel-capsule technology delivers colour and moisture for smooth, silky application and maximum comfort. Triple Butter Complex is used for rich, creamy, lasting moisture – Mango Seed Butter, Murumuru Seed Butter, and Cupuacu Seed Butter

I chose not to upgrade to the full size for an extra $10. I did like the sample but probably not enough to buy it. The matte finish was nice and the colour was long-lasting but I found it to be drying and I wanted to put on lipgloss after about an hour. Flattering colour though.

Hydro Cool Firming Face Gels for Smile Lines SKYN ICELAND

Sample Value: $8.75 / 2 Gel Patches

Turn back the clock by visibly filling in smile lines for up to 24 hours, with this intensive weekly treatment that delivers instant wrinkle erasing results–without a needle in sight. In just ten minutes, these peptide-packed transdermal patches infuse deep facial creases with a concentrated dose of line-plumping ingredients to firm, tone and flatten expression lines you have, while preventing future ones from forming.

I put these on one night while watching Gilmore Girls (again, on Season 6 now).

Obviously I look dead sexy. It was a neat product but I didn’t really notice any difference in my laugh lines after one use. Maybe with multiple uses but at $35 for 8 patches, it’s unlikely I will be purchasing this product.

Lip Crayon BURT’S BEES®

Retail Value: $9.99 / Full Size

Introducing six creamy, full-coverage shades of matte lip color in a modern crayon. Lightweight moisture for a comfortable, everyday wear formula infused with Shea Butter, Kendi Oil, and Jojoba Oil. It’s color that truly cares for your lips!

*Creamy matte color and moisture-rich wear *For everyday wear either alone or layered under a Lip Gloss or Lip Shine *Precise application in a playful form without the hassle and mess of sharpening *No added flavor or fragrance *Hydrates and moisturizes lips, leaving them feeling soft and smooth

I loved the pencil. It was soft and creamy and went on well. And then I would wipe it off because the colour wasn’t right for me. Luckily I have a friend who I knew it would look amazing on, so I gave it to her. I’ll have to pick up another colour now that they are released in stores. (Read Julie from Swatch and Review’s post on all six colours here)

Perk Up Dry Shampoo AMIKA

Sample Value: $10.00 / 30 ml

Freshen dirty hair, create extra volume, and extend your beautiful blowout with a touch of amika’s Perk Up Dry Shampoo. The only dry shampoo on the market with no aluminum and no talc, once you try it you’ll never go back to your old stuff.

I love dry shampoo. I’ve found ones that I liked better than others but none that I’ve hated, so this product is a win for me. This is one of the nicest smelling dry shampoos that I’ve used. And it’s a very light formula. There’s also no white powder finish that there traditionally is with dry shampoo. I will definitely be buying this.

Clinical KP Treatment Cloths PAULA’S CHOICE

Sample Size: $14.00 / 10 cloths

Wipe your KP woes away. And banish “bacne”, too. These easy-to-use keratosis pilaris wipes get rid of those little red bumps (aka chicken skin) and reveal smooth, even skin anywhere on the body.

Treats keratosis pilaris, acne breakouts, and redness

  • Combines 8% lactic acid and 2% salicylic acid to reduce and potentially eliminate bumps and breakouts

I have those bumps on the back of my arms… at least I thought I did until I went to look and realized they aren’t there anymore. Then I wondered about two things: (1) when did they go away? and (2) when was the last time I looked at the back of my arms?? Now not sure what to do with these… I’ll check the backs of my friends’ arms and see if anyone else can use them.

According to this, that puts my Winter Luxe box value around $80 CAD, which is pretty good. I paid $26 plus taxes, which comes to $29.12.

Sorry for the number of pics from the Luxe Box website. I gave some things away before I took pictures of them. And it’s so dark in the evenings that the few pics I took aren’t that great anyways. I promise to do better!

If you are interested in signing up for Luxe Box, I would love it if you would use my referral link here. Next quarter they are promising Benefit products, I’m really looking forward to that! Happy Shopping!

Fall 2014 Luxe Box Review

I feel like a lot of my blog is, “Oh my goodness!, I totally love that product. You should try it. This is amazing. You should try it. I totally recommend this.” etc, etc, etc. This is one post where I am not happy.

My fall Luxe Box was HUGELY disappointing. After such great spring and summer boxes, I was a little pissed when I opened my box. Then I decided they must’ve missed something and I would email them and they would send whatever I was missing along and it would be okay. Then I checked my dashboard.

Screen Shot 2014-10-03 at 7.13.04 PM

No, I wasn’t missing anything. All I could think was, are you kidding me? I got dollar store lotion and a travel-sized hair spray?? What’s luxe about that? And Burt’s Bees? That I could find at the drug store. It was hard for me to even try these products to write this review. But here goes:

Retail Value: $18 (Full Size)

This brush is designed to dust, wipe, and redistribute powders along your features making it the perfect tool for all the finishing touches. The flat fan shape allows for even and soft definition, as well as, fanning away excess product, such as, eye makeup fallout.

I’ll probably use this for the latter suggested use rather than the former. I’ve always thought about buying one so I’m fairly happy with this product. It probably won’t be the most used brush I own but it’ll come in handy sometimes and that reason only is worth having it in my collection

Aqua Cream AMARTE

Sample Value: $10.00 (5 mL)

Aqua Cream® is designed to deliver a smooth radiant glow. This antioxidant-rich rejuvenating moisturizer with 1% retinol uses the botanical ActivExtract® arbutin to enhance clarity through melanin reduction. Functional organic ingredients control skin’s oil-moisture balance and increase softness.

This is actually almost gone. I really liked it and I think I’ve seen some improvement in my skin while using it. That being said, it smells like it has some kind of citrus oil and I’m allergic to orange oil so prolonged use probably wouldn’t be suggested. I definitely got more than 10 uses out of this sample size. With this a little went a really long way.

Aqua Veil Pure Hydration Serum AMARTE

Sample Value: $4.30 (5 mL)

Aqua Veil® Pure Hydration Serum is a light and fresh hydrating serum. Rich in natural herbs and intensive moisturizing ingredients, this deeply hydrating formula optimizes skin’s ability to absorb and retain moisture.  A visible magic-water veil is formed immediately upon application with resultant coolness and softness.

I haven’t tried this, simply because i wanted to see the results of the two serums separately. I’ll let you know how it is.

Universal Blush SO SUSAN

Retail Value: $17.50 (Full Size)

A micronized, jet-milled blush that works with your skin’s natural chemistry to create a universal healthy flush that is flattering on all skintones. Made with Buriti Fruit Oil to repair the epidermis and improve skin elasticity. No Mineral Oils, No Phthalates, No Animal By-Products, Fragrance-Free, With Buriti Fruit Oil & Pink Kaolin Clay, Hypoallergenic, Non-comedogenic.

This is a nice blush. It’s sheer but easily buildable and lasts most of the day. It has a bit of a shine to it that I’m not completely crazy about. The first time I put it on, I put powder over it to get rid of some of the shine but the second time I wore it, I just tried to rock it. It could be more like a shimmer vs. a shine but it’s not my favour blush finish. I’d be interested to see reviews from anyone who can compare this to the Nars Orgasm blush, which is also supposed to be universal and is well-loved.

Lip Gloss in “Ruby Moon” BURT’S BEES®

Retail Value: $12.99 (Full Size)

Rich, pearlized colour combines with natural oils rich in nutrients to leave your lips soft, shiny and 100% naturally beautiful. Available in 12 gorgeous shades.

This is nice. The colour is a really deep berry and perfect for this season. I probably will end up wearing it a few times. But overall, the product does not blow my skirt up. It also has a little bit of a woody smell, you know, like when your lipstick is starting to go off but not quite there yet. I’ve never tried Burt’s Bees before so maybe all their products smell like this, I’m not sure.

Sample Value: $8.00 (50 mL)

AG’s all new High & Dry is a versatile, high-grip, spray that infuses hair with natural lift and a matte texturized finish. The non-powdery and non-sticky spray creates the perfect balance of volume and texture.

So, I haven’t tried this yet. But really, it’s a hairspray. That I’m pretty sure I saw on sale at Chatters the other day.
Tropical Scents Body Lotion LILA GRACE

Sample Value: $4.00 / 65 ml

Keep your skin feeling silky soft and delightfully scented with this moisturizing body lotion that takes you away to the tropics.

This is the product I’m pissed about. I googled it and you can buy it at Kohl’s in the US. Imo, that’s like saying you can pick it up at Winners here. It’s not exactly a high-end product. It’s like a gift that your great-aunt buys for you at Christmas time cuz she saw it and forgot you aren’t 14 anymore. This particular scent smells just like your great-aunt too.

So, that was my review of my Luxe Box. Extremely disappointing from my perspective. Nothing I would buy again. According to Luxe Box, the value of my box was just about $75. Which is below the previous boxes at $83 (Summer) and $90ish (Spring).  According to me, it was barely worth the $25 + GST that I paid for it. All this being said, two outta three ain’t bad. So I’m going to wait and see what Christmas brings.

If this has somehow inspired you to buy a Luxe Box subscription, I’d love for you to use my referral code here.

Happy Shopping!

Makeup box subscriptions

So, 2014 seems to be the year that I’m dabbling in the world of box subscriptions. I’ve been a magazine subscription junkie (up to 8 at once) but this is new to me. Right now I’m only subscribed to Julep and Luxe Box but I’ve been eyeing up some others. Here I’ll go over the two that I receive and talk about a couple of others that look interesting but I haven’t tried.

First of all, there’s Julep. Julep is a nail polish company (that is also dabbling in beauty products) and has a monthly subscription box. The box retails for $24.99 USD and there is no shipping costs. On the 20th of each month, Julep opens the Maven reveal and Mavens (subscribers) can view the items available for each box and pick one of the styles that suits them. It’s usually one beauty product and two polishes or three polishes or two full-sized beauty products. The styles are named: It Girl; Boho Glam; Classic with a Twist; Modern Beauty; and Bombshell. When I take their quiz, I fall in the “It Girl” category but I’ve taken boxes in all the categories over the last five months.

There seems to be a love-hate relationship going on with Julep and their customers right now. People seem to love their products but hate the company they came from… weird. Julep admits that they’ve grown too fast in the last six to 12 months and are trying to catch up with demand. Which means they have problems. Problems like boxes taking weeks to get to Mavens (subscribers) or boxes having incorrect or missing items in them or all three problems. So far, Julep has been pretty good to me. Yes, my boxes take ages to arrive (usually three weeks, just before the new Maven window opens). I had a broken polish a couple of months ago and Julep replaced it, no problem. I’m missing some polishes this month and I have no doubts they will send out the polishes promptly.

Here are some photos of my boxes but apparently I didn’t start taking photos of my boxes until July:

July box: The Poolside Collection

August box: The Wanderlust Collection

September box: The Art Walk collection

I’ve also bought several beauty products, usually through add-ons and mystery boxes. I have  the face primer, the eyeshadow primer, the lip primer and the eyeliners, most of which I intend to review at some point. Overall they are good products and I like them. (Leave me a comment if you have one in particular you would like to hear about and I will do that one first.) If you are interested in trying your own subscription box to Julep, I’d love for you to use my subscription referral link here. You can get your first Maven box free with the code FREECITY (but I think you have to pay shipping, which is minimal).

Next up is Luxe Box by Loose Button. This is a quarterly subscription (one every three months: March, June, Sept and Dec) and is one of the few Canadian subscription boxes out there. Apparently they used to be monthly but then switched to quarterly last year. I haven’t had any problems with Luxe Box at all. The price tag is $25 CAD plus tax  and I believe the value is in the products you get to try.

Here is my Spring 2014 Luxe Box (Read the full review here)

And here is my Summer 2014 Luxe Box. (Read the full review here)

If you wanna give Luxe Box a try, I would love it if you could use my referral code.

So those are the two I do try. Here’s some info on two that I’ve been debating.

Ipsy Glam Bag is a monthly makeup box for $10 (seems to me that Canadians also have to pay $5 shipping). I’ve been watching reviews for months now and they are seriously all over the place. Some people love their monthly bags and some people hate them. Three of my favourite beauty bloggers get the Ipsy bag consistently so if you were really interested you could head over and see what they thought about it: Rebekah at Lipsticks and Lullabies; Kalyn Lord; and Julie from Swatch and Review.

The last one I want to talk about isn’t really a subscription box and it isn’t about makeup. It actually doesn’t really belong here but I want to talk about it and it’s my blog. Popbasic puts out monthly(ish) micro-collections of three clothing and accessory items. I look at them every month and every month I talk myself out of buying it as there is one item in the box I have no use for. But I really loved the t-shirt and the black pencil skirt in the Jane Collection. And I’m still kicking myself over not purchasing the Paloma collection. And while I didn’t think I like the vegan leather skirt in the Ashbury collection, I’m sure I would’ve found a use for it. Shipping is apparently free for these collections (which sadly are all sold out). I would love to hear if anyone has shopped at Popbasic and hear their thoughts.

Wow, did that week ever go by fast! Did it for you too? I recently started a new job and it really hasn’t kicked into high gear as it’s summer but boy, I got a good taste of what fall is going to be like. Lemme tell you, the forecast is BIZZY! lol

Anyways, here are some interesting things I’ve found this week:

1. Luxe Box by Loose Button is finally offering referral credits. If you’ve read my Spring and Summer Luxe Box reviews and you love them and want to sign up, I’d love it if you could use my referral link here. If you want to receive the Fall Luxe Box you have until Sept 7th.

2. The Simpsons makeup collaboration with MAC is up on the website for sale. It arrives in stores next Wednesday and I will be there checking it out. For someone who doesn’t care about the Simpsons at all, I am really looking forward to checking out the new lipglasses. Check out the reviews by Kandee.

3. Fall fashion is slowly rolling out around us. And does it seem even slower than last year? It’s like even the fashion industry felt the polar vortex from last winter and is dragging their heels into fall. Here’s a couple of cute pieces from Kate Spade that I am just loving!

4. These boots from Aldo need to be discussed. The colour says beige on the website but do you see that shine?! I am running down there soon to see if these babies actually rock as much as I think they do. I’ll keep you posted.

So, how was your week? Any plans on saying adios to summer during this September long weekend? Happy Shopping!

Summer 2014 Luxe Box Review

20140729-160959-58199237.jpgHey folks, anyone else get a Luxe Box this season? I didn’t take any of the upgrades. Some looked really nice but I love the element of surprise in my Luxe Box. Overall I was pretty pumped about the box. I know it’s been a month since I got my box but I really wanted to review the products not just unbox them and that always takes awhile. I’m also going to be stealing photos from websites for some of the products because I got carried away during Sample Killah and forgot to take photos of the packaging before I threw them away.

Here’s a list and some comments about the things I got:

Nexxus Color Assure Sulfate-Free System
Sample Value: $2.00 (2 x 5 mL & 1 x 9 mL)

Spring 2014 Luxe Box Review

Way back in December I signed up for a Luxe Box from Loose Button. Since they are only quarterly boxes, I just received my a few weeks ago. Bekkie from Lipsticks and Lullabies got completely different stuff in her box than I did. She paid the extra $5 for the upgrade and I did not so maybe that’s the difference? We aren’t sure.

First of all the packaging is gorgeous. It’s a heavy, white gift box and then your products come in a silky bag, like a shoe bag or a lingerie bag. Very nice!

No Dark Shadows complexion enhancer

Full Size / $20
No Dark Shadows is a multi purpose complexion enhancer designed to conceal imperfections and dark circles under the eye area as well as highlight the complexion. Available in two universal shades – Wow (rosy tone) and Pizazz (yellow tone). No Dark Shadows will wake the eye up and highlight the t-zone. The oil-free formula is waterproof and long lasting, enhancing your complexion for up to six hours

The first thing I noticed when I opened this is how good it smells. Like lemons. Nice and cheery for blurry eyes in the morning. The product twists up from inside the brush which makes your first swipe with it a little heavy, so keep that in mind when applying. I applied it to the dark circles under my eyes and then straight down the middle of my face: between the eyebrows, down the nose and on my chin, all to hide the large(ish) pores on my face. I didn’t bother applying it anywhere else as my skin tone is fairly even. I used my beauty blender knock-off that I bought at Shoppers to blend it in. It disappears wonderfully and leaves my skin very smooth-looking and lasts all day. I typically don’t use a CC cream or foundation so I haven’t tried anything over the complexion enhancer.

Fekkai PrX Reparatives shampoo and conditioner

Sample Value: 59 mL x 2/ $10 Full Size: 236mL / $20 each

Help repair and protect hair daily with the indulgently effective care of PrX Reparatives Shampoo. Fekkai’s masterfully crafted repair shampoo fortifies and provides strength against damage.

At first I was a little concerned about liking this product as it had “Argan Extract” written on the side and so far I have hated all the argan scented things I have tried. But this was light and fresh, definitely nice. I have permed and coloured hair so I tend to use alot of conditioner but with this product it didn’t take much for my hair to feel silky smooth. Overall, I like it alot but saw the full size at Shoppers the other day for $28 a bottle, so probably won’t be buying in the future.

Gel eye pads

Full Size / $30
Close your eyes and relax with this soothing eye mask; warm or cool. May also help with headache and sinus pain.

Umm… what do I say about gel eye pads except that I’ve never worn them before. I will give these a try sometime but really, if I have five minutes to myself it’s unlikely that I’m going to use them lying on the couch with things over my eyes.

Lancome Advanced Genifique

Sample Value: 8 mL / $20  Full Size: 50 mL / $125

Award-winning serum that helps create a more youthful-looking skin by promoting natural skin renewal that is characteristic of young skin. Visible results in just 7 days. Drop by drop, skin is vibrant with youth, its tone becomes astonishingly even and its texture dramatically refined.

I am actually super pumped about this product. I have a huge line right by my left eyebrow where I tend to furrow my brows so I have been looking at line-minimizing and anti-aging products for awhile. I have been using Snoxin and Hydraluron from Indeed Labs and I’ve been really happy with that but I would like to try some other products just to see what is out there. This is just a small sample of the product so I doubt I will have enough to do the 8 weeks the website suggests to see marked results but you probably don’t need much so we’ll see how it goes.

Marc Jacobs Dot fragrance

Surprising and effervescent, energetic and alive—DOT by Marc Jacobs captures a charming, upbeat spirit with timeless sophistication. Simple and straightforward in statement, exuberant and feminine in design, DOT is a colorful Marc Jacobs creation that comes full circle with a balance of modernity and elegance.

I have been looking for a new fragrance for awhile. Buying a fragrance is the most ridiculous process in the world. Smell four to seven fragrances in the store until you realize you can’t tell which one is which anymore because your nose is overwhelmed and refuses to continue smelling. Throw a couple of those scent cards in your purse and leave, thinking you can try smelling them later. Three weeks later when cleaning out your purse, discover the cards and frantically try and remember which perfumes you had sprayed on there. Of course you didn’t write it down, you knew you would remember! (haha) Go back to the store in another three weeks, stare at bottle and will yourself to remember which one (or seven) that you liked last time you were there. Realize that it’s been so long that it’s a new season and all these perfumes are different from the last time you were there. Either give up or buy something at random that you end up hating. Repeat.

Okay, so maybe it’s not that bad but perfume samples are always a good idea. I’m looking forward to trying this one. I’ll let you know how it goes.

BareLoveBeauty Body lotion

Sample Value: 30 mL / $9 Full Size = 88 mL / $28

The first luxury FIRM Oil with proprietary OlioLove Technology. Bare Love Body is fueled to improve skin elasticity, vitality and overall radiance. Rich in Vitamin C,E, essential fatty acids and Omega 6 & 9. Helps improve the appearance of dry, cracked skin and protects against external factors

I have only used this product once so far. It was kinda greasy going on but made my skin feel soft for hours after. It will need further testing before I decide whether I really like it or not.

So that was my first Luxe Box and I have to say I was pretty happy with it. Looking forward to the summer box and sharing it with you.
